I have successfully split the drive and auger control from a single handle to two.
This is the machine as purchased

and this is how it looks today

I still have some minor work to finish on it. When purchased it had 1 control that worked both drive and auger, preventing you from creaping or nudging into that wet heavy stuff, it was all or nothing. Now I have that option.

This was done to a Murray built Craftsman snowblower (536.882700) and it should work on virtually any 536 prefix 7-10 HP snowblower. It will probably work on similar mechanisms used on other brands, though there likely would need to be changes as appropriate.

Read about it here:

Enjoy and hope it helps someone.

Toro 826le hole in cylinder wall

Hello all from MN- I migrated over from the tractor forum.

I picked up a nice Toro 826le for free and now see why. It has a large hole in the cylinder wall where the starter mounted.

I am trying to find the most cost effective solution. A used motor is one option but haven't found one yet. In looking at the parts diagram, I think I could replace just the cylinder assembly but that part alone is over $200 bucks on all the part sources I have looked at.

Any other ideas out there?

Saw an ad for an Ariens 8HP 24" blower, supposed to work fine plus has the manuals and it's within my comfort range on price ($50). Guy gave me a model number of 005498 but that doesn't look right to me, so we'll see what it actually is if I get it. He's using a neighbor kid to plow his drive now so doesn't need it any more and his wife wants it out of the garage.

I'm going to look at it tonight and see if it's 'right' or not. After 10 Craftsmans I've bought to rebuild the last year, this is the first Ariens so we'll see if it comes home or not.

I'm still putzing with that last 10hp 32" 3 stage Craftsman so this will probably go into the queue for the next rebuild if all is as represented. I'm having problems finding the right Craftsmans for the right price so looks like I'll have to branch out a little or quit rebuilding blowers. Wish me luck
