Ariens 920002 starting issue - carb

Ariens 920002-000399 -- STE724E -- Tecumseh - OH195SA

My engine will not start. I am getting very little combustion. White smoke comes out of the muffler after trying to electric start it. I have a new spark plug and I have confirmed there is spark. I pulled the carb off and cleaned it. It did not seem very dirty but I do not know if I missed something in it. If I over prime it, it leaks gas from carb. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks.

Make sure the throttle butterfly is opening. Might be stuck closed from sitting. Is there Fresh Gas in it? Try a shot of starting fluid.

The linkages all seem to have normal movement. I tried starting fluid and all I get is a few chugs of blue/white smoke and some back fires.

Since your engine is an overhead valve (OHV) model, it is pretty simple to pull the valve cover and check the valve clearances to make sure they are at the correct settings. Should be .004 thousandths (.1016mm ) on each. I'm guessing you have at least one valve out of spec.

Having gas leak out of the carb if over primed is normal.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
