Is a Ariens st724 that needs work for $50 worth it?

Never owned an Ariens so don't know anything about them. This is an a ST724 , not sure how old that the guy has put a lot of work into. a new carb and he bought some piston rings for it and not sure why.

it smokes a little and gets very hot and screams when running. did not want to run it and maybe blow the motor so not sure if everything else works. he says it does.

he only wants $50 for it so would you take a chance on it? would it be worth fixing or maybe for parts? I see they sell from about 250-400 on craigs.

i just don't want to get started on a possible money pit.

Watch vid ad make your descision.
If I were in the market for a blower and this one is in good overall condition I'd definitely get it. Stick a Predator engine on it if engine tosses a rod.
I have one of these... Nice machine.

GEvening O/P, Can't really go wrong with a running Ariens for $50, as you could part it out if things go sideways. It would be a cheap learning experience if nothing else. I'd grab it, if for nothing but parts. But before cutting it up, try getting the engine squared away, BEFORE it blows!!! GLuck, Jay

Horrible Fart sells them for 120 bucks, with occasional sales at 100.

it sounds like a governer issue, if your lucky he hasnt run it like that long enough to cause any real damage, but if it has some serious engine damage you can buy a predator. either way for 50 bucks you cant loose in my opinion. just make sure the model number starts with 924 before you buy it(924 series machines use single shaft engines) they made more then one version of the st724 a full size 924 series one and a compact version

From what I understand Harbor Freight has them for around $100-120.

That problem does sound like a governor problem. It's possible it is stuck.
I bought an edger that had been sitting out for a while and was a bear to start. When it would start it would immediately go to WOT. I checked it out and all that was wrong was that it had stuck and all it needed was a little lubrication. It starts first pull now, and runs fine.

The weak point with this model was the gear case. Plenty of good carcasses out there with a blown gear. MH

I repowered a ST 724 about ten years ago and love its operation. The Predator swap is perfect for this blower.

I'd say go for it, as the Predators are easily available and there is usually a $99 coupon in most of their catalogs I get each month.
