Sounds like something is jammed in the impeller if it stalls when you engage. Might be a newspaper, chunk of wood, brick. Could also be the gearbox is seized. If you remove the auger belt, can you rotate the big pulley on the auger at all, either direction?

Work fascinates me.

The impeller for the chute is bent so I am going to try to bend it back. Can you advise me the best way to go about it? Take the whole auger out? Do you know how to do that? Thank you.

ok so the impeller is bent, but is it jammed up against the housing, preventing it from moving?

Yes it is so I am going to take it out. Heat it up in the vice and bend it back. Try to at least. I hope I don't bend it out of round. Hope it works.

I've found this to be easy way to straighten impellers in the vice. You can eyeball it level easily. Your impeller might be different than my pixx.
Very important to check status of gearbox, something that made it past augers to the impeller might ov broken shear pins and or gearbox.

If you can tell us more about the machine, that would help people understand what exactly you're working with. The model name (like ST824) is a good start, if you also had the model # (like 924184), that would be more specific.

To remove the auger assembly, you will likely need to remove the bushing mounts at the ends of the auger shaft. And you'll have to remove the big pulley & hub from the impeller shaft.

On two of my Ariens (both of which were rusty), removing this pulley from the shaft was no easy task. Good luck with it, I hope yours comes right off!

And like Shaw351 said, check the auger gearbox while you're working on it (edit- check that the auger shaft turns smoothly when you turn the impeller shaft; I don't mean open up the gearbox for no reason), along with the shear pins. You must have sucked something nasty into the impeller to bend it. Hopefully nothing else was damaged in the process.

I fixed a one bent impeller on a murray made craftsman. A sturdy vice and a big hammer got it 90%. I used a smaller hammer and large anvil to shape it the last little bit. I Did not need to apply heat. Fortunately the pulley cam off with minor persuasion.

Good as old.

Did you find whatever it was you hit to bend the impeller? Must have made quite a bang at the time.

Don't go too nuts with the heat, you don't want to soften the metal too much. Maybe google "heat treating steel" so you can find out how to retemper the steel after your unbend it.

Suggest a good walk around before the snow hits to remove any other potential problems.

Work fascinates me.
