1988 ST724 Gear Case Grease

I am replacing the worm gear on my Ariens and removed an 1980's brown grease of some sort. My question is can I just assemble the gear case and fill it with like a standard multi-purpose grease like the Red type from Valvoline or Tractors Supply? If not let me know what would work.
Thank You

if its real sticky kind of stuff it is called bentonite and I would use the same. ariens has used a few different ones over the years. I will have to try and look it up.

woodtick! you can use 000 chainsaw bar tip sprocket grease or get the betonite grease from john deere, it's pretty close to the same thing. the john deere grease comes in a tube and is used for greasing combine heads. it is clay based and real sticky! will not flow out between axle and cases. john deere special purpose corn head grease part# an102562 http://www.greenpartstore.com/John-D...-AN102562.html
