Ariens SS522 938017 Engine pops and stalls repair

Machine: Curb recovered Ariens SS522EC, Model #: 938017, Engine: Tecumseh TH139SA.

Symptoms: Starts, pops, white smoke comes out from exhaust and carburetor. Runs on choke only. After 30s, loud pop and stalls.

Fix: Cleaned carburetor especially main jet hole and the tiny hole in the main jet. There were quite a few derbies and water in the bowl.

After putting the all parts back, it starts on first pull and runs great. The next step is to get a new fuel tank (approx. $75) not sure if it worth but decided to get one.

The challenge was to get the carburetor off without taking off back panel, as well as not to break the governor and choke linkage, but it was manageable.

First post here. Got excellent information on how to diagnosis. Thanks everyone.

Sounds like it might be flooding, have you checked the float, needle valve and seat to see if they all function ok.

The float was OK, no leakage problem. The spring and needle valve were OK, too. Not able to locate the seat but I tried my best to clean all the orifices. The unit is now running OK.

Might be rings. If they are badly worn and not sealing the crankcase might be getting pressurized with combustion gases and that’s your smoking from the carb.

No valves on 2 strokes, the piston is the only thing separating the the suck, squish, bang, and blow.
