CL Ariens ST724 $100, gears are stripped, worth it?

I have a Ariens ST522. I like the lightness and maneuverability of the blower over any of my 8, 9, or 10hp machines though I use all of them. I like the Ariens for its snow throwing and use it for light snows, even for driveways though it's not as wide as my others, it tires me out less as I don't have to use reverse gear and can flip it around and turn it and pull it backwards.

I've been thinking of replacing my Ariens ST522 and wishing if I could find a Ariens 7hp 22" or 24" (if they had a 22"). I saw on Craig's list a Ariens ST724 for parts. He said the gears are bad on it and he decided he didn't want to fix it. I don't know yet, waiting for a response, if one or both gears are bad. I believe the gear box is intact and he has that.

This line added - His ST724 looks exactly like my 1986 ST522 so my guess is in the 1980s, maybe mid 1980.

He's asking $100. What say? Fair? Too much? I emailed him asking how the belts are, also the condition of the friction disk. Why the gears went, I don't know. Hit something, wrong shear bolts, low lube, old lube, just wore out?

1986 Ariens ST522, 5hp, 22"
1995 Murray Craftsman 10hp, 29" w. 12" impeller
A 1983 Real John Deere 10hp, 32" w. 12" impeller, 16" auger, 20" high front, cast iron gear box, chains
Noma 9hp, 27" w. 12" impeller
Noma 5hp, 24" w. 12" impeller, 20" high front
Gravely Convertible, 12hp Kohler cast iron, 26" width, 600 lbs of cast iron & steel, 2 speed impeller, 4 ground speeds
Dynamark 8hp, 26", 12" impeller, for sale
Several other 5hp, 8hp, several 2 cycle, all for sale

Unless its less than 10 years old, IMO $100 is too much for a non-runnng machine.
If we are talking about a 1960's or 70's era machine, I would say $50 tops for a non-working Ariens.

Any idea how old it is?

Scot

No idea yet. I could get the exact model and serial number from him. My ST522 is 1986. It looks exactly like mine from the picture so I'd say also 1980s.

Does that change your price?

If it’s the aluminum auger gearbox the gear is $40 as I have one to put in myself, If it runs and is in really good shape I would pay $100 but def try and talk down the price, I too like a lighter machine for lighter snow, thus I built the SnoTek 24.
I’m forgetting about age, I am thinking it’s the 724 with the modern chute and the oh Tecumseh engine for that price.

Sno-Tek Modded, 15"X-Track tires (Now has same X-Track tires but 13"x4" for better fit), 254cc engine LED light and hand warmers.
Snapper 6/22 sold but not forgotten. Was my first.
Ariens ST1027LE workhorse and going strong.
New 2017 Ariens Deluxe completely rebuilt after losing a fight with a forklift.

It has a taller metal chute, not as tall as the chutes today but not a short stubby one. Metal gears, not plastic I believe, not sure, I haven't used my Ariens this year. Probably the aluminum gear box as mine has that. Old Tecumseh engine. If it ever goes then a Predator.

And there are "buts" such as "but you didn't find anything else wrong until after you purchased it."

JL...just my preference.....but if I were shopping for a 24 in Ariens...I'd be looking at the 924050 ST 824.....I like the whole package better then the 724 you are looking at. I pick them up needing paint or minor repairs for less then $100......done up they rock..... I like the lever controls better as well.
