I had my spring come off when I was screwing around with the idler pulley alignment. I looked and looked and could not find where it hooked. I finally found there was a hole on the side panel that was the landing spot. Unfortunately, the only way to rehook it was to remove the drive pulley. It actually went pretty easy, just had to remove some junk to get the pulley off.
If you do a little tear down, you will be able to find a hole approximately the length of the spring (plus extension) near by that will move the idler toward the belt.
Good luck

I that picture situated correctly???? What we are looking at is North is North the picture is not turned??? If so I see two possible spots...First, if you keep pulling that unattached side of spring to the direct right in photo it looks like there is a notch on the far right side at same height. Second, not sure if that belt is close to the back we are looking at but there is an oval then a thin open space line down to a circle....it looks like it might slip in there. So spring would go from attached spring side bottom left of pic then take unattached side of spring to upper right side to that oval thin line to circle hole?????

The only picture I have of the spring does not show where it attaches....some of the Ariens boys will help I am sure once they read your post.

Yes, I think I see where the spring goes. On the right, where the yellow arrow points to. At least I think that's where it goes.

Had to import it into Photoshop, enlarge and brighten it to see.
