Ax414 on a Platinum 30. Surges then dies

Just bought this 2 years ago from a guy who only used ut once. It ran great the 3 or 4 times I used it last year and the first couple of times this year. Last time I used it (2 weeks) ago, about 20 minutes into using it, it started surging and died. I can restart it after priming it with the choke on. Runs 5-15 minutes then surges and dies. I drained the carb bowl, pulled the tank, drained it, cleaned the fuel filter and blew out the fuel line and fuel shut off with brake clean. All in all it was pretty clean. I mean you can eat off this thing. Ran great in the shop. Took it out this afternoon to clear some snow. Surged right away died. Prime, choke, start. Did that twice in 5 mins. Then it ran fine for 20 minutes. Shut it down as I was done

Only fresh premium is used in all my stuff. Did some googling on it then though yeah. Maybe it’s the governor. I have lots of experience on bikes, sleds, boat etc but zero on goverored stuff like this or generators and pressure washers.

This unit is near new condition and it’s totally an intermittent fuel starvation issue. Looking for some pointers.
I only guessing on the governor being at fault and although I’m mechanically inclined, I have no clue where to start adjusting this. The Videos on old Tecumsehs don’t help at all

Thanks

Did you leave gas in it over the summer? If so, carb needs a good cleaning most likely

I removed the tank, fuel line and fuel shut off. Drained and cleaned them out. Fresh fuel, no change. Runs great then after 2-5 minutes sputters and dies.

It could be. I did drain the bowl. No change. So would you rule out anything with the governor.? When I re start it, it runs great for 2_5 minutes or so.

Could also maybe be your gas cap not venting properly.

Thank you, I was going to suggest the same. Especially where it runs for a period of time, then dies. If the gas cap is not venting properly, you start to form a vacuum in the tank, as the fuel level drops.

You can unscrew the cap partially, and see if it will keep running, but depending on how snug the cap is, it might rattle itself down, so it's kind of sealed again. Or you can do something like put a plastic bag over the tank's opening, and secure it with a rubber band, or similar. Poke a few holes in the bag (your vents), and see if it will run like that. If it keeps running, your cap is having a problem, and maybe you can clean it, or just replace it.
