Doing routine maintenance today, greased axle and slid wheel back on. Key shifted in towards machine and wheel wedged onto axle. Simple right? Pulled the wheel off to reposition the key and ... clunk the axle pulled out with the wheel. Had no idea that the wheel retainer is what holds the axle in. Slid right back in ok, just caught me off guard as never happened before. (Machine has the automatic differential).
I think you are missing the C clip that retains the outer axle shaft to the inner axle shaft that runs the entire width of machine. The C clip fits onto the inner axle and prevents the outer axle from pulling off. The C clip is made of thin metal and is easily cupped and then does not work correctly. The wheel retaining clip also fastens to the inner axle shaft.
