new ariens, starter problem

Purchased a SHO28 brand new winter of 2018, used it twice then put away for summer. Last week (early december) I needed it and tried to start with electric start. starter began sounding normal, but before the engine caught the starter whined like it was broken, then stopped. At that point it would not respond at all when starter button pressed. Started engine by pull cord. A week later needed blower, tried electric start, it began spinning and sounding normal, then whined and quit. Nothing after that. started engine by hand.

Any suggestions? This machine is virtually brand new. Did it strip a bunch of teeth? If so, shouldnt it spin without catching? I remember the sound of a bad starter in my old pickup and this is similar,, but why the no response at all?

I suppose I will pull the starter and look. Doubtful it is under warranty still. sigh..

i'd try lubing the drive as it's possible the armature has some rust on it under the drive gear, other wise find a automotive starter rebuilder and take it there,
not a hard unit to fix, just the brushes are one royal pain in ones stinky end when one doesn't know the tricks

With Ariens 3 year warranty is seems unlikely that a 2018 machine is out of warranty unless you damaged the machine by not following the procedures outlined in the manual. I suggest you contact your dealer and see what they say. The starter could have an internal protection for those trying to start it by holding the starter button down more than the recommended 15 seconds. Did you accidentally hold the button while the machine was running? Also did you use a cord with at least 13 amps capability? Using a cheap low amp cord is not a good idea.

Your new machine should be easy to start.

Use fresh non-ethanol fuel
Synthetic oil that meets Ariens specs
Develop a routine for number of prime presses per outside temperature
