Top Loader gearbox free play

The cast iron gearbox on my 2015 Platinum allows the impeller shaft a 1/4" of free play to move in and out of the gearbox. Been this way from new. There is no adjustment in the top loader gearbox for impeller shaft adjustment that I can see. But no issues so far and I am into my 6th year with the machine that gets lots of use.

Earlier Ariens models with a different cast iron gearbox appear to have an adjustment in the gearbox to take out this free play. A member here did the adjustment and removed all the free play. But I have not seen any longer term information.

I can eliminate the free play using a washer behind the impeller to move the shaft a 1/4" farther into the gearbox, but is that wise? Any considerations that I don't know about? This would be something for the spring.

Town,

It seems this gearbox has been faithful for a long time despite the movement. If it were me, I’d stay out of the gearbox, leave the factory seal intact and simply let it ride.

Decided to add a bushing between the impeller boss and the impeller bearing inner race to take out the free play in the shaft and better support the bearing inner race (i.e. support from both sides). Bearing had parts of inner race missing so several ball bearings visible and grease shielding opened up, somewhat typical for 2 years of use on my machine. Installed new Ariens bearing with a 0.488" bushing between impeller boss and inner bearing race. All free play in shaft was eliminated and gearbox moved smoothly without binding. Under power all parts moved freely and no vibration or movement.
