New project, maybe a rehash

I received a 924039. In pretty good shape. It has an 8HP with a newer carb missing idle mix adjustment. It also has a differential which seems neat. The bucket is the larger one but the aluminum clam shell auger gearbox is screwed up.

My current machine is a 924032 that looks like **** but is in prime shape. I put a 10HP on it and a bigger auger pulley. It has an iron auger gearbox and new tires, but a straight axle.

I'm toying with a plan to put the engine, tires, and auger gearbox off my 924032 together with the base and bucket of the 924039. Then I could piece the other parts together, fix the gearbox and sell it.

How's that for a plan? How are those old differentials? Are they rugged? I used a newer Ariens with a differential and it wouldn't stay straight on an uneven driveway.

The cast iron gearbox from your 924032 would not fit in the bucket of your 924039. The rest of your plan is pretty good, though.

It won't??? They're almost the same machine, I was under the impression similar model/vintage augers were the same.

I've been told that the buckets do not interchange. If they did, I would think that at least one of the creative folks on this forum would be running the old cast iron gearbox with the newer bucket.

The bucket and gearbox as an assembly will interchange, but the caqst iron gearbox will not fit into the more modern design.
