thought I ruined my ariens snowblower but repair man said might have just broke pin on worm gear its a used machine(model #910955)that was given to me and had bolts instead of shear bolts augar stopped turning worked fine for 2 storms. dosent jump or seem to want to catch just blower turns. could i have dodged a bullet? now i was told to drain oil from the gear box and see if by hand i can turn the gear and check for stripped groves or if a little shaving come out from pin holding worm gear on shaft. then line it up and knock out rest of pin but must go through the bottom bolt hole and bang up to have enough room all this to avoid taking the whole augur apart. anybody ever had this problem?
What model is it, I’ve changed a few gears and it’s not that bad to do and actually gives you the chance to grease all the needed parts and tighten all the bolts along with never seize them so it’s easy to work on down the road, Seen a broken and stripped gears but never the pin breaking.
Someone actually broke the key for the brass gear on an MTD based machine on here the other day..and we know how easy those gears go out...OP might be lucky here as well.
first off a big welcome to the snow blower forum JKW!!
as others have posted yes it has been photo'd and posted that it's possible to break off the key way under the brass gear and possible just as possible to strip the gear,
It's not a woodruff key under a brass gear. The 910 series had helical gear that is pinned to the auger shaft. They can and will snap the pin, the hard part is the broken piece usually has a left over "hangnail" on the lip making it hard to get out. As with any of these auger gear assemblies, removal and taking it apart is a PIA but necessary:devil:
Here's what it will look like inside, the helical gear is quite stout.
The new part is a complete assembly $$$$$$. The old part number for gear is 01018300, pin 05802200
There is a guy on ebay "sidegrinder" (from this site) that I found a long time ago before I ever joined here that has lots of old school parts.
hello again have had time to look at the snowblower and found that the roll pin is gone from the inside of the gear box not many shaving came out but hole goes right through problem is seems like a new roll pin might just go right through I could be wrong but looks that way. Wondering if I got a sex screw or chicago screw if that would work since I do not want to take everything apart i can only tighten from one side and seems like there will be enough room for the part to rotate, when i put a screw in to try it did move when i spun the inside throwing thing and did not bind up anywhere, what do you all think?
