old snowblower part

hello from Wisconsin. sure glad I found this sight a wealth of information here, I have a small problem a spring broke on my ariens #910954 spring # 08300400 is there a viable replacement hate to pay $20 plus mainly because I need it sooner than later. Local hardware store carry springs but does it need to be a certain tension or can it be close? any help woiuld be great

Is the old spring in tact enough that you can compare to what you find at the hardware store? My guess is that given the fact that it could be 50+ years old, the margin of error might be a little more flexible... Why not use the HW store one to get you through, and order the correct part to change when it arrives...

FYI there is currently a part listed on Ebay in Wisconsin. I have no earthly clue if it's close to you, but if it is, maybe you could pick it up?
