lost key on auger pulley?

Throwing snow from the latest foot of snow I abruptly lost power to the impeller and auger. So I tear off the front expecting a bad belt but it was fine. Then I see pulley is spinning loose on the fan shaft. There was no key on it? Just vanished. The two allen screws were there and tight.

So 2 dollars for a new key and some lock tight and it's back on the job. Anyone ever lose a woodruff key like that?

I don't think it is possible for it to come out unless the pulley is removed. Has anyone done work to the machine? Maybe the set screw was pushed into the slot just enough to hold it and some corrosion helped the rest until it broke free.

Please direct all snow blower questions to the forums and not to me with PMs.

Several years ago I did the fan bearing. The ariens parts guy said sometimes they vibrate out but I can't see how that would occur with the curved side imbeded in the shaft.
