1970's 22000 Gear Case Compatibility?

My 1970's Ariens 922008 (5HP 20in) has a stripped helicon pinion shaft in the auger gear case. I was wondering if anyone knows which cast iron gear cases from other contemporary models are compatible with this one?

The auger attachment on my blower is a model 922003 (serial 021827). The pinion shaft is nearly completely stripped. The helicon gear itself is slightly chipped on most of the inner teeth but is probably still servicable if need be.

It doesn't appear the individual parts are available any longer, and have all been susperceded by a complete gear box assemby (p/n 52201000). Unfortunately this part is listed as being compatible only with serial 033701 and up for the 922003 attachment, though I've been unable to find out in what way it's incompatible with earlier serial numbers such as mine.

So it looks like I'll have to find a compatible donor gear case which leads back to my question of compatibility. So far from what I can see most 1970's 20-24 inch models *should* be compatible, but the note regarding compatibility of the newer replacement gear case has me wondering if there's a hidden "gotcha" I need to know about for the early model 922003s.

Kind regards,
Dave

I don't think I could provide a Cost-Effective Solution, Especially with International Shipping involved, and the exchange rate.

If you are interested, try emailing this guy behind this 922 series Ariens that is currently being listed for $100 up for sale on Craigslist. The seller is located in Newbury, Massachusetts - which is located right near the New Hampshire/ Massachusetts state line. This guy is asking a $100 for a pretty good looking 922 series Ariens and the ad states that the seller would be interested in parting out the machine. If anything, for $100 - should the machine even match up to begin with - perhaps it would even be cost effective to buy and then have it shipped to Ontario. Who knows - at least you'll have a nice parts machine as a back-up...

This should work. The lister is located in Hudson, Massachusetts, which additionally is not that too far away from where you are in Ontario.

Do I have the right model here? These are the old compact 922's that have the 14" impeller and supposedly pack a lot of power for the punch.

The 922 gearbox is supposedly around the $275 mark. You are asking $125 for a full machine. So how much does it cost to ship the thing over the upstate New York border to Ontario?

You are asking $125 and are located on in Hudson, Massachusetts, which abuts both Rte.'s 290 and 495, both of which are the main tractor trailer shipping lanes from lower to upper New England and into Canada. So, if the Ariens model numbers and the seller's asking numbers all match up, what can we do to make this happen?

Wow, a lot of replies quickly! I've been lurking on this forum for a while now but until now have never needed to post a question.

The first link doesn't look like a 922 model, but the second link (Jackmels') is it exactly. The exchange rate is about as bad as it's ever been right now which makes cross border purchases a lot less cost-effective. I'm actually in Ogdensburg, NY every six to eight weeks or so, so picking stuff up at the local UPS Store isn't a big deal for me.

There are usually a good number of 1970's Ariens for sale in my area for between $35 and $125 CDN depending upon condition and if it's running or not. I just need to figure out which models have a compatible gearbox.

To that end I'll be spending some quality time tonight with the parts manuals. I was half hoping there was a forum "expert" on the gearboxes that could quickly rhime off a list of models or other gearboxes that could possibly be fitted to it also, but a look through the parts manuals should provide the same info.

I'll post an update once I have it figured out in case anyone else ever needs it too.

Kind regards,
Dave

Ogdensburg, NY, hometown of Rick Carlisle, longtime head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

I'm sure Richard would very happy that you are taking your time and making a well informed decision. Good luck w/the gearbox parts search.
