Surprising (& scary) damage spotted this morning

On my 2008 Ariens ST624E 2 stage. The past time I used it (I think 2 weeks ago), when I first engaged the augur, there was a noise, which I thought was from ice frozen behind the impeller, breaking loose. I was moving it today and saw what happened - I have not damaged it like this before. The outermost edge of the augur was bent out a few inches, so when it rotated, it hit the head of a bolt on the side, and then the shear bolt broke. Good thing I keep spare shear bolts, and I had to bend the metal augur back to about where it was. I wonder what I hit to bend the augur? I once broke an augur on a single-stage MTD, I think from end of driveway ice, but that was a much flimsier augur than this.
I guess the next time I hear a noise, I won't just assume the impeller was frozen.
