Take pics BEFORE you take it apart!

I'm guilty! This has happened to me many times and recently. It looked simple? But now how does it go back together?

With everyone having a cell phone today, there is no reason not to take pictures before you take it apart no matter how simple it looks. Like take pics of the holes in the carb's throttle plate before you remove the carb, and the throttle arm.

Take pics of the auger belt and spring before you replace the belt! Not forgetting to remove the bottom pan as some springs connect down there.

These examples seem to be common questions on here.

1986 Ariens ST522, 5hp, 22"
1995 Murray Craftsman 10hp, 29" w. 12" impeller
A 1983 Real John Deere 10hp, 32" w. 12" impeller, 16" auger, 20" high front, cast iron gear box, chains
Noma 9hp, 27" w. 12" impeller
Noma 5hp, 24" w. 12" impeller, 20" high front
Gravely Convertible, 12hp Kohler cast iron, 26" width, 600 lbs of cast iron & steel, 2 speed impeller, 4 ground speeds
Dynamark 8hp, 26", 12" impeller, for sale
Several other 5hp, 8hp, several 2 cycle, all for sale

I often do that too. So easy, just whip out the phone and snap a few. It has saved me from a wiring error once.

Great advice. The best part is when I forget to delete them when I’m done. Months later I’m going through pics from some trip and I find a weird, alien mechanical photo. Then I kind of flip the phone around trying to remember what it was. 😳

great advice. i don't have a smart phone or digital camera so i label everything with a sharpie or tag with blue painters tape.

on more complex jobs, i bring out a notebook and draw a picture .

may graduate to a smartphone if they ever become affordable for a guy like me on a fixed income.

This is right up there with "save your work as you go" on the computer. I've learned both the hard way.

Because the world is divided into 2 groups of computer users: those who have lost data, and those who will...

when moving pics from phone, folders, harddrives etc, "do" use the "copy" command and not the "cut" command, if something messes up during the transfer you could lose ur pics, once copied over then feel free to delete from original location

Pictures do help . . . I was thinking that recently after I had disassembled a Toro 3521 and had a bunch of hardware scattered on the garage floor.

Fortunately, I had screwed most of the nuts back onto their respective bolts, so at least I had some semblance of order

I also try to take things apart only to the extent that is needed . . . that way, the various 'pieces' are fewer & bigger

Uploading pictures from the phone to the computer is easy with a Mac . . . not quite as easy with Windows PC's.

Regards, Ted
