First start of rider Mower...Uggggh!!!!!

Has anyone tried to start their rider mower and the starter runs but the mower will not turn over.......you turn the key off and remove the key but the mower keeps trying to start and you can not stop the engine turning over?????? I run to get a wrench to loosen batt. cable and after 45 seconds to a minute....it turns itself off.

I let it cool down a couple of minutes I put the key back in and it started right up.....I do not know if I damaged it at all....it sounds different and seems to vibrate more but i am not sure if I am over reacting or?????

Any thoughts????? Should I just run it????

Also the if the starter was turning but not the motor, the gear on the starter needs some WD-40.

Motor was turning just would not start ...flywheel was spinning pretty quick.....

That is what it was like...the ignition got stuck.....when i turned it off the motor/Starter kept spinning and I removed the key.....was rather frustrating. I punched the coil.....nothing....thought it was frozen..

I turned the throttle down which also did nothing...

Hope no damage as a result....

13hp Kohler....has been solid for 14 years....Well maintained.

Your starter solenoid switch contacts were stuck together. Sometimes they "Burn" together, I.E. "Weld" together, and stick. Sometimes the magnetic piston that moves inside the solenoid switch housing sticks.
Usually just tapping it with something will "Un-stick" it, but not always.
That is a common occurrence sometimes, you may have to replace the starter solenoid switch at some time, either now, or in the future. I see that problem happen a lot of times. It is scary when it happens, you don't want to burn out the starter motor or have the battery go dead, or have a fire from the heat created when it happens.

Thank You ST ,Cranman and ef26 ...I appreciate all of your help. That is what I thought I tried to hit it but.....

Do you think engine cranking without starting would have harmed motor at all or just the starter solenoid took the brunt???
