Brand new, no woodruff key

Hi, today I bought a Yard Machine model 31AH64FG500. We are in the middle of a massive snow storm and it was basically the last one in town. Anyways, I used it and maybe did about 100-200 ft and it worked good. Then suddenly there was no drive to the wheels. So I looked and there is no pin in the axle for the gear. The woodruff key I think it is called.

It was already assembled and was the floor model, so I am wondering if the pin wasn't installed. But then how could I have used it for 15 minutes. Can that pin just fall out?

Welcome.

Floor model... experience says once you go there all bets are off re. assembly, or what happened to it in the interim... Just a newbie here myself but I'm sure someone will chime in soon with experience on your particular machine.

Were you able to get 'er up and going again?

I am thinking of either taking it back or trying to find a woodruff key in town tomorrow. We are in a massive storm so I don't know if anything will be open and I don't want to wait too late if I decide to bring it back. I would think that the woodruff key would be something installed at the factory and not by the selling store who assembled it for the floor. Which would be homehardware.
I am just now concerned that there are more things wrong with it. I would expect a brand new snow blower to last more than 15 minutes.

The good news is that a real good hardware store will have those. Kind of sucks but it's easily fixable. You should let the store know about what happened so they have a chance to make it right for you maybe they'll give you a small store credit . Better than nothing.

The meltdown is under way ...

Maybe the key sheared? Would not drive without it even from the start.

They are sometimes called woodruff keys. Hypro is a specific man. improved version.

If they moved it a lot on the floor without starting they may have partially sheared the key before you even received it, you just finished shearing it.

I hate to say this because I don't know your budget but I have to. Anything from MTD just makes me cringe. and this machine is made by them. Now there can be a screwup with any make of machine but if your can return this machine and afford a higher priced machine, that's what I would do. Then be heading out to a Toro, Simplicity, or Arians dealer. Just my two cents
