Owning both a SS and 2-stage: when do you use each?

If you own both a single-stage and 2-stage, how ugly do things have to be before you tend to bust out the 2-stage?

I use my single-stage when I'm clearing the deck off, the two-stage all the rest of the time.

I may be a little biased since I have a 300' driveway and a large parking area to clear, but if I owned a two-stage machine, I can't understand why I'd ever want to use a single-stage in its place. Yes the SS may be lighter and easier to handle, but if both are self-propelled the difference won't be all that great. And almost all two-stage blowers are wider than almost all single-stage ones, meaning they remove the snow faster... regardless of how much there is. And to me that's the most important factor.

~1994 Ariens 924084 (ST1032) "papa bear": restored, re-engined, real nice!
1991 Ariens 924050 (ST824) "mama bear"
Toro PowerCurve 1800 "baby bear"

Be alert! America needs more lerts.

Oh man, interesting. I was close to pulling the trigger on a Honda HSS1332atd. But I realized I might be better off spending the same money (actually, less) on an Ariens Platinum Track 28 *and* a Toro single stage.

My driveway is steep so I need to get it pretty clean, so if I get just the honda I might need to scrape the clear parts with a shovel after.

Clearly I need to build a bigger garage then buy 3 or 4 snowblowers and try them all.

I always have one of each. I prefer the SS 90% of the time because I can get it done much faster since I am not stuck with the gear speeds..... they tend to throw better when you push harder too. But, once in awhile the heavy wet slop EOD stuff is to much for it..... and then Big Bertha has to come out. Just put new blades on the old Honda HS 35 and she's ready!

I am deathly allergic to shovels!

I haven't had a chance to use my SS yet but I imagine I will use it a lot since we get a lot of 2 to 6 inch snow falls. I also need to use the 2 stage to clear a spot in the yard or my dog will do his business in the drive way.

Who knows I may not like the SS.

Garage
last winter was my first experience with a ss machine.....now i would never be without one ! its used on the deck only, and i will use it with as little as 1 inch of snow down dependent on the forecast. my two stagers dont see action for anything under four inches, and if its fluffy stuff, not till six inches.

Used my SS a lot last year, Used 2stage to make a walkway in back yard for my dog.
Use the Orange Crusher only for heavy EOD or major storms.
