I was in manufacturing engineering, but now work in information technology. Mechanical and electrical stuff is more of a hobby to me. I used to work summers as an electronic test technician while in college.

I see that you are from the Tri-city area. I went to RPI in Troy . . . quite some time ago. ;)

Hey Kensico, glad you enjoyed it!

the only gasket that really needs to be treated is the sump gasket.

I actually recently started using the copper spray on small engines...figured it couldnt' hurt especially with break-in. It supposedly gives better thermal contact thereby breaking-in in a more uniform fashion.

Most important thing with head gaskets is to make sure the head is flat; research "dressing a head" (basically putting emery cloth on a piece of flat glass and rubbing the head on it until you can't get a feeler gauge in there). torque in the correct order and in increments of ~ 50in-lbs.

the muffler, intake and breather all get put on dry.

Enjoyed reading your post on Alice, I just completely tore down one of the Hahn 524's I bought off of CL. I bought some books and took apart the 5 hp Briggs, the valves look like they need to be lapped and I put a solid state ignition on it when I first got it and it leaked, found out that there was a double gasket on the muffler. I was in the process of getting all the paint and rust off the engine parts and blower but I tore my bicep tendon at work so project will be on hold for a while. I saw you put gorilla snot on the sump and Permatex copper spray on head gasket, but was wondering if any sealant should be put on the other gaskets (muffler, intake, and breather cover) appreciate any advice you could give me. I'm glad I have 2 so I can look at the second one to help me build this one. I never did this type of work, bought some books off a eBay. Thanks Ken
