Working on a neighbors unit. Carb was too far gone with rust and corrosion to thoroughly clean. Could even get the main nozzle and jet out. Ordered an after market carb.
Fired right up and cleared 3 sections of 8’+ snow like a champ. Didn’t bog down, had plenty of power. Stopped clearing snow and let the unit sit there and idle. Eventually it began to hunt then stopped running. Did this yesterday AND today.
For the record, it has a new plug, fresh 50:1 mix, and new gas filter.
Even though I’ve worked on small engines since 1998 I’m a bit stumped. I doubt if this has anything to do with the governor.
After sitting for a bit or definitely following a refuel the vacuum could go away but if it seems like it's starting to hunt and starve after using it again, crack the cap right away and see if the prob stops.
Gas cap venting seems fine. Blowing thru the hole in the gas cap sounds clear.
After going back out to check the gas cap, and since the rear lower shroud is off, I noticed the bowl is wet, flooding. Float/needle/seat issue. Sort of makes sense now...I think.
Contacted the seller. Could be a defective carb? Grrr
It's always possible some residual junk in the gas line flowed down stream and is preventing the needle to fully seat. Will drop the bowl and check it out.
I had one that did the same. It was the ignition, IIRC. It would only run for 10 - 15 mins at a time. Once completely chilled down, ran like a champ again.
RE flooding issue: After dropping the bowl I noticed a few tiny black pieces in the bottom. Looks like the fuel line might be disintegrating thanks to today's gas with Ethanol. All new fuel line, blew out the fuel filter. Blew out the carb pretty good including fuel & primer inlet, down the throat, up the main jet etc. No need for carb cleaner at this point.
Fired it up and let it sit for awhile. The heck with clearing my neighbors drive. LOL Eventually it started doing the same thing, surging then stops. While it was surging and almost dying, pulled the choke out 1/2 way. Ran for a few minutes then wanted to die. Now it seems like a fuel starvation issue.
Also pulled off the gas cap again. Nothing changed.
One good thing, it no longer leaks gas.
Uber T: Never thought about that. Some older B&S engines had same issues. Laminations expand, no spark. Hmmm.
Had it out again trying to confirm spark right after shut down. When it stopped, clipped a spark tester to the plug and then into the plug boot. Tried starting using pull cord. Was hard seeing the spark being outside but sure felt it. :surprise: By the time I got back in the garage it started again with electric start. Hmm. Not discounting a coil going bad with spark getting weaker, but....
Decided to look at something else, crank case gasket. Pulled the muffler for grins. Couldn't see any obvious leaks but did notice what appeared to be a separation between crankcase halves in corner to the lower left of the muffler (shroud side). The engine appears to have been wet from that point across to the right but doesn't mean much since muffler is right above.
Frustrating, but owner is patient anyway. Me...another story.
After checking everything under the hood - went as far as testing for a crankcase leak - decided to put put it back together and check for spark (again) after shut down.
One thing I did do: When getting the "Igniter module" back on (little metal can attached to shroud below carb) I scrapped off the black paint on the shroud and cleaned up the rust on the back of the module around the 2 screw holes.
Can't believe this may have been "the fix"...so simple????
Fired it up and let run for 1/2 hour. No surging, no shut down. All the snow is gone so couldn't put it thru the paces.
