Governor spring hook up under gas tank, Chinese motor

I have a Craftsman snowblower, model 31AM63TF799. It is basically the same as the cheap Chinese Troy-Bilts that the big box stores sell. The governor spring goes under the gas tank and connects to a lever that has multiple holes. The spring was not attached to this lever when I took the tank off. It had been over-revving. I need to reattach the spring but am not sure which hole it goes in. I am unable to find a diagram. Any help out there? Thanks.

Can you post a picture of the parts involved? Might be easier to give meaningful directions if we can see what your setup looks like.

Many of the governor arms have multiple holes with letters or number stamped beside them. On B&S engines for example, the spring USUALLY goes in the centre range of the holes somewhere, but they can be moved to other holes to provide more or less tension as required to get the top RPM set.

Depending on the setup, it is also possible to adjust the other end of the spring, where it anchors to the throttle control or throttle plate, by bending the anchor point a bit to either increase the spring tension, or reduce it, still aiming to achieve the proper full speed of approximately 3600 RPM.

If your spring is missing, first thing to do is get another one, and then install it in the center range of the holes. You might also need to adjust the governor lever position on the governor shaft (the part that comes out of the engine and rotates to move the governor lever). It will be easier to provide accurate comments after seeing photos of your governor/carb linkage etc.
