Bolens 824 Re-power

I picked up this Bolens from a local repair shop some time ago. ($25) It had a blown Tecumseh 8HP. I finally gave up on finding a short block for the Tec and was initially going to use a Predator 212 to re-power. I decided that the Bolens needed more power than the 212 (6.5HP) could give.

I found a Briggs and Stratton 14.5 GT snow engine at OPEEngines.com. It was the best price I could find on the internet. $220 no tax and free shipping.

So I took a chance and I couldn't be more pleased. Love the power and the Bolens is in terrific shape for an old boy!

I also recorded the process and posted it on youtube

14.5 HP? On a 24", overkill, the 6.5hp Predator would have been fine however you did get a great price on that engine and the engine does not look ancient.

No not 14.5 HP... it's 14.5 GT (Gross Torque)... that is more like 9-10 HP

Now I need to find heated hand grips that will work for a handle that measures approximately 1 3/8" diameter.

Also want to do an impeller mod.

Great job on that Bolens I bought the same engine such a good deal I couldn't pass it up. I've enjoyed watching your videos on YouTube, especially the one on the Briggs 130202 I've been following them , I have one off a Hahn 524 that I'm going to rebuild. I ordered lapping tool and spring compressor and other tools. Thanks. Kensico

Nice job! I think the Predator 6.5 HP is around 9 ft-lbs of gross torque.

Nice clean looking job! It looks about the same frame size as the Tec you replaced. I will have to go look at your You tube video to see what was involved.
Also looks like there was no chute control rod to have to contend with.

What is the vintage of your Bolens? I am not sure if the Bolens brand is still being sold. I just don't see them around anymore. MTD did acquire them at one point.

Good Luck!

Fantastic job w/ the repower.

I have a Bolens 824 that I built out of two dead ones. I believe his green one is late 80s/early 90s.

My red one has the green one's engine/gearbox/scraper bar.

I will say, though, that my 924040 that originally came with the 8 HP Tecumseh now has the 212cc Predator engine... and that the throwing distance between the two are very comparable.

I followed suit and got the Briggs 305 as well. At that price, how could you pass it up ???

I Also put it on a 24" machine. Certainly could have done the Predator, but the AC charging system and the electric start make this Briggs less expensive than the Predator, considering the time, money, and effort to add those things.

The extra torque comes in handy too. Per the specs, the piston bore is 3.12" with a 2.44" stroke. The bore is starting to rival automotive engines. . .
