What will replace the Ariens AX254 ?

I recently picked up a later model Ariens Deluxe 28, 921030/114XXX with a suspected blown AX254. Pulled the engine and opened up the case and the bottom of the connecting rod is shattered and the crank doesn't feel in any stretch of my imagination reusable. I'm not finding any damaged Ariens to pull the engine from or used AX254's in this area and apparently they don't make that engine any longer. If I could find a used one that would be great but is there anything that would for the most part be a replacement?
Has anyone done a repower on one of these and have a link to their "How To" ??

Not sure about Ariens, but the base LCT engine the AX is a variant of appears to be alive and well: StormForce? 254 - Liquid Combustion Technology, LLC

What's the crank issue? Hard to imagine an aluminum rod doing too much damage to a hardened crank journal . .c.

I didn't get a real good look in there. The bottom of the rod was literally in pieces. What I could feel was that the shoulders of the journal were paper cut sharp and the journal felt scoured. Not like there was some aluminum on it but cut into the surface. I was going to take it out to the barn and if I get the time this weekend pull the head off and piston and remains of the rod out and then inspect the crank journal better. I had hoped I could get away with a $55 rod and gasket kit but ....
Thanks for the link

Went back out to get the model # off the engine.
Grabbed photos of the crank and journal.

The problem I'm seeing is I have a crank that sticks out just under 2.5 inches and the ones I was looking at are close to or well over 3". This one has the dual auger belt drive and I think that's why the crank is shorter than what I'm seeing in replacements. I'm trying to do the easiest bolt on I can without changing the mount or the belts. The Harbor Freight 301cc would be nice if I have to do some modding
I have all summer to figure it out. Still hoping for a busted gearbox parts machine

Looks like just aluminum swarf on the journal from when the rod let go . . . I have heard of folks cleaning that chemically and then fine polish . . . might be worth a try . . . I personally think that a lot of stuff is errantly scrapped that could be fixed at a pretty low cost and some time . . . A quick cleanup and then see (and measure) what you have might not be a bad idea.

I'm betting that it will clean up, and rod and gasket will do it, if you are willing to take the time. Aluminum just can't hurt steel - too great a difference in hardness.
