24" MTD a good candidate for repowering? Answer-- yes if price is right.

With a Predator motor sitting and awaiting a home for it I was cruising Craigslist. I found the MTD 319-550-000 5 speed 24" snow blower. Price is $250 for a 1989 snow blower. I found the manual on line and it is a single shaft motor. Camshaft is not powering the drive wheels. Below is a picture. Any known problems with this model? You can see in the picture the cover is missing over the pulleys. That little gem is available but on back order for about $20 plus who knows how much to ship.

It's an older one, looks clean of rust, needs a belt cover and a set of chains for those lawn tires, but looks like it would be good candidate for repower. ;-) nice find. Myself I would offer 200 cash if it's in good shape since it's a smaller chassis machine.

The meltdown is under way ...

Thanks for the feedback. I have to be careful I don't end up with $400 for a repowered 1989 MTD snowblower. Let's say I get it for $200, cover is another $25 and the Predator with 1 year warranty is $130. I am at $355. Plus new tires or chains. Chains also are not desirable because of the damage they do to concrete the always delightful rust stains on the garage floor.

Wait until the Predator goes on sale again for 80 buck with coupon, or even 99 with coupon. If it's going to fail it will do it pretty quick, I'd not opt for the warranty, you wont use it, it's buying air. I used to work retial many many moons ago, they love to sell warranties, the rate at which they get used is so very low.

I bought Predator thinking I could adapt it to my two shaft Tecumseh motor that powers the Bolens but it comes with Peerless gearbox and there is no reasonable way to reverse the Peerless gearbox drive output, The 1 year warranty was bought in case the motor has infant mortality issues beyond the miniscule warranty. I probably won't start the Predator for a few months.

Look for gustoguy's repower of an MTD or any of the Troy Bilt repowers for info. I did a predator 212cc repower on my 2008 TB storm 2410. Runs better now then with the stock 179cc powermore engine

Gusto and I have been pasting pictures and posts back and forth. The Bolens 5210R with a Peerless 700 series three speed gearbox (gears in an aluminum case) can't be flipped and there is no room for installing a reversing set of pulleys under the pulley cover. It isn't going to happen. Below is the gearbox in my Bolens 5210R made in 1989. Troybilts like what Gustoguy has doesn't have one of these to drive the rear wheels. His setup can be flipped. I would have to make a new one.

A single shaft engine would be a piece of cake to swap the engine on. Funny that he has a turf style tires on it because my 1995 MTD came with snow hog tires. $250 is a lot of money and with the new engine and new pulleys you would be looking at nearly $400 once it is up and running. I say look for a good deal on an old single shaft engine snowblower with a blown 7hp or 8 hp Tecumseh. You can pick them up for $50 or so and have a nice machine for just under $200 with the Predator 212cc re-power.

I have a single shaft setup from the factory, also used a gearbox like that, and I put a Predator on mine. Could be my gearbox is designed different but take a look at the Toro Powershift 824 / Peerless / single shaft , double pulley setup. It might lend some insight, not sure. Let us know.. I'm pretty curious now about the difference in the tranny if it is. Someone here may already know the answer, lots of experienced folks around, someone may chime in.
