snapper 1030 repower

Looking at a snapper 1030 that looks clean but does not have engine. Is this something I could repower I know the orig. Was a tecumseh 10hp that's no longer available. What is a good replacement engine for this blower?

Welcome to the forum Triguy

Diesel is the only way to go.

There are plenty of options from the crazy (diesel) to the crazyier like the 22hp twin cylinder of Geno's to the more normal being a 6.5 horse Harbor Freight Predator at $99 to $129 depending on the sale.

That Snapper would be a good candidate for any re-power. You can even search generator engines which are usually really cheap but you need to use an adapter as the crankshaft the drive pulley sits on is usually tapered and the pulley won't fit.

Thank you for the warm welcome and the info. I will keep you posted on what I decide but I like the look of this snapper. Would diesel be good in cold weather? What would be the value of this machine with new motor? Diesel sounds like fun

I want to go diesel on one of mine just for the odd factor and the sound of it.
Would love to see the look on the neighbors face, what is that ??
You can see vids on youtube of guys who have done it and they're up north where it's cold.

You'll never get the cost of the engine back in used blower value. Even if you get a 6.5 horse Predator at $99 bucks you'll be lucky to break even.
What keeps me from going diesel is it's China and I'm worried that for the inability to track down a cheap part the engine wouldn't run.

Look through the re-power threads and it will give you ideas.

The 301cc would be a better choice than the 6.5
The 301 might be as strong torque wise as the original Snapper (Tec or Briggs) 10 horse.

IMHO you could get away with the 6.5 if you need to go cheap but the 8 horse is a much better choice as would something bigger like 10-13 horse.

8 HP (301cc) OHV Horizontal Shaft Gas Engine EPA/CARB

That 30" Snapper with the right engine can eat some snow
You also want to make a choice on if you need to have a headlight and want to add hand warmers or if electric start is necessary. Electric start is usually convenient but with us older guys or if you have an injury sometimes electric start is the only way it's getting started.

Yeah, it would be really cool to have a diesel blower Extremely unique. With the torque of a diesel, hopefully bogging under a load would be reduced.

That would definitely be a concern. The HF engines probably share similar concerns, BUT parts for those seem quite a bit more common. And Honda clones are fairly common, so perhaps parts from other engines could be used.

I admittedly know nothing about these small diesels. I'm inclined to think parts are not readily available. But at the same time, if I didn't know a bit about the popularity of HF engines, I'd assume parts for those would also be completely unavailable. Maybe parts can be had, if you know where/how to look?

Their up-front cost is also an obstacle. You can get a 10hp engine for a fair bit less than $800, so trying a diesel also brings a cost penalty.

But it would be really cool, and I hope someone tries it

This is a photo of Geno's 22 horse twin cylinder Ariens.

The craziness is only limited by your time, ability and wallet.

Wow that ariens is quite the machine. Love the diesel as well. I'm afraid my wallet is not big enough to go the diesel route but the harbor freight 8 hp is more my budget. Do these hf engines have the correct shaft sizes and if not how do I modify to make it fit? I believe the original was 1" dia. X 2.75" length. Would 1x3 work?
