Predator 212 stalling issue

Repowered a friend's Toro 521 with a 212 Predator. He loves how it performs...except....it stalls every minute or so. "Like it's starving for fuel."
Sounds to me like a tank venting problem because it will start right back up on one pull and then die again after a short spell. Anyone have a similar experience with the 212? I told him to try running with a loose cap and get back to me. MH

Tank venting is a good idea to check.

Any chance the carb is icing?

Very possible...I asked if the engine had been seeing a lot of snow and he said yes..I thought maybe the air filter might need removing..snow engines don't use them and it may have clogged with snow and ice, but I wanted him to try the cap thing first. MH

I'll bet air filter icing.

Garage:

Motorhead, first thing I did when I repowered my Toro 724 was open the main jet to .032" and the idle jet to .020" for winter use. Then I used a piece of sheet metal to shield the carburetor linkages & springs from icing up, freezing. I'm running it without the air filter.

Did you replace the stock spark plug with a NGK BP6ES?

I'm no expert but there's a reason why there aren't air filters on snow engines. I'm going to go with carb icing but anything's possible.

Dust is not that much of a concern in winter. Air filters can suck in snow, and the snow can block the filter and when it melts and freezes again, its like putting a piece of sheet metal in front of the carb.

My Briggs engine has a fine mesh screen over the carb intake in place of an air filter, plus the show shroud to keep those wind whipped clouds of snow from making a beeline into the carb intake.

The breather tube from the valve cover has also been sort of directed toward inside the shroud towards the carb to possibly add a bit of warm air in the vicinity, either that or it's a very crude vapour recirculating system.

Work fascinates me.

It came with an NGK plug which I thought strange. I made no jet changes...left completely stock. Wondered if there was a "snow kit" as there was at one time for Hondas. MH
