Talking My predator yesterday.

Two strange happenings yesterday.
(1. Filled it to the top with fuel yesterday checked the oil and started it. Once it started running rough due to rich of fuel I closed the choke to half choke. At half choke it is running fine and warming up Ran it about 100 yards to the drive way (was in back yard shed.) Just as I hit the drive it stalled. One pull and it is running and I totally shut the choke in the off position. Not another problem.

(2. Snow was stranger than I have blowen with this blower before. I see that the distance it is throwing is getting smaller and smaller. I did the one drive way then moved next door did all that drive way and just as I finished the last sloppy bit of end of drive the engine loaded the governor and stalled.
Started right up with one pull grab the handles to start impeller and forward motion it stalls again. OK time to see what is locked up. Chute is plugged solid never had that happen before with this machine even several inches of slop didn't plug and stall the engine. Back at the shed I poked the stuff from the chute and it started and ran fine to clear the chute. But I sure had a icy build up all around the metal part of the chute.
Guess I will start spraying that area with cooking oil when it is a wet snow.

Some will debate this but cooking spray has always do ne the trick for me. I sspray bothi inside and outside so snow won't stick. I also spray my shovels.
Pleas be very careful when unclogging your machine. Way too many "accidents" happen each year due to clogs and jammed machines.

Time for an impeller kit. I installed one last year and this past storm i did not have one clog. my neighbors Craftsman was clogging every 5 minutes.

In the mean time use some kind of a spray lube. I have not opinion on what is the best. I have used silicone spray in the past.

I did the impeller kit back in Oct when I replaced the engine with the Predator. I always use a hickory stick I cut just for doing this.
I buy the dollar store veggie oil and put in a spray bottle just for this.

Like I said some thing was different with the snow yesterday.

The sudden dying with half-choke doesn't sound like a big cause for alarm to me.

I have a Tecumseh, not a Predator. But I'll start it with full choke, and go to 1/3-1/2 choke for a little bit, maybe 30 seconds to a minute. It might sound OK with partial choke and no load, but if I then start blowing snow with the choke still on, it will immediately struggle and run poorly. Turn the choke off, and it's perfect.

So if you hadn't put a load on it (blowing snow) until you got to the driveway, maybe what you saw was something similar? At least in my experience, these engines aren't meant to do any real work with partial choke, it's just there to let them warm up.

That is right on. With a partial choke you are preventing the engine from making the full power it is designed to make.

When ever someone says it runs better on a partial choke and they think it runs ok. They are band aiding an air leak somewhere in the intake. In that case fix the air leak and run it as intended.

Try turning the low speed jet out a little. If it doesn't improve, you prolly do have an air leak.

Not going to do any thing with it. Runs fine has lots of power and starts better than another engine I have used except another Predator.
Just that one little stall is all and ran fine the rest of the time till the bad clog.

Won't fill it right to the rim any more with fuel though.

The Predator has a fixed idle jet as do Honda's that it is cloned from.

Ally, as long as you feel the clogging was the root problem and it is now running good off of choke you should be good to go.

Well I have decided the first stall was due to the fuel level being so high. Have to research the vent for the tank.
Second stall was the chunk of slush that froze in the chute and stopped the impeller and auger. Once I hammered that out it finished the job fine.
