Exclamation help needed 2 shaft Tecumseh broken

hi to all I have a ariens 2 stage thrower I thinks it is a 932001 or around there it has a 3.5 Tecumseh motor with the two shafts the motor is not running anymore. I am wondering if it would be possible to change the motor out to a single shaft motor if so what type and what an I going to be getting into with this unit. I know it has a friction wheel drive system I know the unit is very old but in good shape other then the motor. if anyone can help me with any type of advise I would really would appreciate. thanks

It can be done but it's a pain for a few reasons. How about we fix/determine what's wrong with yours first? I see a double shaft motor on my CL right now actually..... he's asking $100 but I think $40 would be realistic. Anyway - give us the lowdown on yours and what you have done to it if anything yet.

Hi Crome
Welcome aboard. Yea, the cam pulley motors are out there. I have a couple in the 5 hp frame that are awaiting transplant. The one pulley approach would reverse all your drive gears...you would end up with more reverse gears than forward. Give us the symptoms you are facing and we may be able to get you up and running. I would really like to get rid of the techumseh motor if all is possible. I think it broke a rod inside but didn't come out of the case. I sure would not buy another one I would like to put a brigg Stratton on it if possible.

motorhead64 thanks for the reply what type of motors do you have. also can a person still get parts for these old two shaft motor or not, I guess I need to just take the motor off and get into it to see if it can be fixed or not. I just don't like the old techumseh motors and would like to trade it out to anything else.

The big problem is with the two shaft engine. The crankshaft spins in one direction and the camshaft spins the other direction and at half the speed.

So it's not a matter of just putting both pulleys on a single shaft.

Parts are still available for your Tecumseh. If you're really lucky it might only need a new connecting rod and that in your case would be the easiest fix.

Right - nothing wrong with a good old Tec. It's the path of least resistance. Otherwise part it out and get a more recent yet low budget blower. They are a dime a dozen. Heck I just bought another one for $75 and go tit going inside an hour..... easy flip.

Couple of ideas:

Consider taking a risk on something like this. Asking price is up there but you might be able to transfer the stuff required to make it functional from your existing engine.

You might look into the possibility of buying a single shaft Tec of the same frame size and then swapping some parts over from the dead engine to the new one: camshaft and tappets, side cover etc to see if you can't build a functional "hybrid".

If that doesn't pan out another other option might involve some fabrication work to adapt the transmission selector (etc) to give you the correct number of forward and reverse speeds with a conventional single-shaft solution.
