Talking 8hp Predators.

How does this engine stack up to a tec 8hp engine? Is it as well thought of as the 6.5hp is?

Have a change to get a really old odd looking MTD that needs an engine I am told.
I say odd looking because looking at it the impeller rotates the same as the augers rather than at right angles like todays blowers.

From what I understand they are made by Loncin engines of China. This is the same company that makes the engines for Toro's newer 2 stage machines. It should work well and prove reliable, members on this forum seem to be very happy with them.

That style of snowblower throws snow incredibly well. If I am not mistaken it already has rubber mounted to the impeller blades. I had one labeled as a snapper. I might be able to dig up the manual.

Every old "odd" snowblower that I had that had the impeller spinning the same way as the augers has been an incredible performer.

I had an old Simplicity, I think from the 60's. It had the same impeller layout, the impeller spun in the same direction as the augers, and had rubber paddles on the impeller.

It was my first blower, only had a 5hp engine, and was generally quite tired. I didn't have anything to compare it with, but I remember being much happier when I got my "conventional" 8hp MTD. But the Simplicity might have had a good throwing distance for what it was, I don't know.

this one had been for sale. fellow came and bought it, took the motor off what he really wanted and left the rest. Present owner said the original engine was a 8hp tec.

I figured the 8hp predator would work perfect but I am not getting answers to my questions really.

(1. How does this engine stack up to a tec 8hp engine? Is it as well thought of as the 6.5hp is?

There haven't been any complaints on the 8 hp Predators. They aren't nearly as common as the $100 6.5 hp but so far they are superior, one pull start, more power, less noise and better fuel economy then a Tec. The threads I've read have all been positive and the owners were very happy with the swap and how the machine works out in the snow.

I have looked at the 301, and the 212 for a repower on my Ariens 10000 with a 8HP Tec. I decided to go with the 212, as the 301 has a higher shaft height, meaning resize belt, and belt/shaft cover problems. The 212 looks to have the same shaft height, as the Tec. Also, mounting. The 301 has a wide (side to side) mount holes. It looked like it would be very close to the edge of the mounting surface to drill the holes.
