Gear Box Grease

Hi All,

Quick question- Have an older Simplicity 924IE snowblower and I'm reworking the gearbox. I am looking for an alternative grease to use inside the box. The manual says Benalene Grease but hard to find so looking at either a Grease "00" or a #1/#2 grease? When I pulled out the old unit, the grease inside as almost like peanut butter and black. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks in advance

I use 00, 90 wt, or a mixture of to two, depending on the machine.

I've got the Allis Chalmers version of a Simplicity 826 (vintage 1983).The gearbox seal failed on one side enough to allow the "special Simplicity gear oil" to drip out.I replaced the oil with "00" grease that any auto parts store carries.Mixing with a little gear oil,as cranman stated, to enhance flow at low temperatures might not be a bad idea.

I also own two Ariens ST824's that use "00" grease,as designed..As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing in the Allis's gearbox that isn't in the Ariens,so I'm not going to worry about it.

My Toro 521 is supposed to have Lubriplate Mag-1 lithium polymer grease in it.That stuff is hard to find around here, and rather expensive.I WOULD HAVE used the "00" grease in it,but the seals are so bad that the "00" pukes out, too.I went to Schaeffer's synthetic EP grease(NLGI1) in that.
