Oldie but Goodie

Hello all,
Just thought I would tell you about my Oldie but Goodie Simplicity 5hp 2 stage Sno Away that has 2 foreword (slow and slower) and 1 reverse gear and the original B&S engine. It was given to me about 25 years ago and it did not run. I am pretty good with a wrench and had it running shortly thereafter. Been using it ever since. If I had the inclination I could load up my neighbors garage roof with it, but I bet he would not be very appreciative of that. It has had a few problems over the years and below are some of the things that I have done to it.

Replaced bearing on both stages.
It would pop out of gear, so I took apart the gear box and fixed the problem.
Recoil starter issues.
Replaced first and second stage chains and belts.

Took the head off the engine to remove carbon build up on piston and valves.
Went through the carburetor a couple of times.
Replaced the points with an electronic module.
I have never been into the crankcase but it does use some oil.

Attached are some pix of the machine as well as a shot of Lake Michigan as seen from Saint Joseph Michigan yesterday. Ice as far as you can see.

Anyway, keep the side walks clean and mailboxes dug out for the postman.

Wow, nice machine you have there. Agreed, nothing like the old heavy steel to stand the test of time. Looks like it blows great...keep it going!

Yes, they do not build them like this anymore. It is not very pretty but it gets the job done.

Very nice solid machine! I recently replaced the points/condenser with an electronic module as well on a 1965 Ariens 10M60. Great piece of kit, and not worries on setting the timing.

All,
I am new here but I would like to see your machines that are in use today. I do not care if they are rototillers, garden tractors or what ever, show us the machines you use today.
Thanks,
TMP

Nice Vintage Machine. Just picked up a "dinosaur" 68 Simplicity, 7HP 26" cut that sat in a barn for 5 or so years. Trying to get a magneto for it since it wont start. Noticed that you got into the gearbox. Mine is missing reverse and wondering how hard is it to get inside to find the problem. Any ideas?

Well used 68 Simplicity 7HP 26".
From a good friend after the last snowfall.
Hoping to get it started.
