Make location mandatory

I'm not a fan of mandatory anything, but just the state would suffice. It's annoying and you might have a neighbor who can assist.

Agreed. Other sites have such a rule and it helps everyone when trying to respond.

I prefer things the way they are. Choice is good. Considering the size of some states and provinces you could still be a several hundred miles apart. If someone needs or wants to offer help all they have to do is ask.

Much agreeing with the first 2 posters as members span almost the whole continent with very different snow conditions. JMO

Snow Removal Apparatus I own:
Ariens ST1530DLE, and good ole arm powered scrapper.
The 15 HP is a new Ducar engine sold
by Princess Auto in Canada.

I completely agree with Rob711 it is frustrating sometimes when members seek advice or post prices etc. that are region or even country specific and other members haven't a clue where they live or what they are talking about. As Rob expressed we do not need their town or zip code, just a reasonable idea where they are from even a state would often be very helpful.

I see members that have posted several hundred posts and you don't even no where they are from, what currency they use to purchase equipment etc. On a forum so well laid out and moderated in nearly every other way, I consider this a shortcoming.

All the best.

Disagree. Sorry folks. If location is important it should be noted in the post, end of story.

Should be... but often isn't. There seems to be a fair amount of time & space here wasted answering questions like "where can I get Ariens parts?" from people who turn out to be in Brillion, Wisconsin.

But I also don't like being forced to do things!

How about a middle-ground approach, like a nag prompt when you create a profile with no location? The prompt could be bypassed, but could remind people of the benefit of entering that information.

~1994 Ariens 924084 (ST1032) "papa bear": restored, re-engined, real nice!
1991 Ariens 924050 (ST824) "mama bear"
Toro PowerCurve 1800 "baby bear"

Be alert! America needs more lerts.

Well said and a good suggestion.

+1 for this. But, I think at least a state/province should be mandatory, what's the downside? This is not a government web site, don't even need to use your real name.

Some good points but I still don't think it should be mandatory. Encouraged sure, but not mandatory. I feel it would result in many not wanting to join. Just look at the number of members now who have chosen not to submit their location. So what if someone doesn't want to post their location? What harm to the forum is actually being done if one doesn't? If you think knowing their location is important then all you have do is ask. If they don't want to say then that's their business. If this change is made what going to happen with those who haven't posted their location or told you where they live when asked? Kick them off? That's not very friendly.
