Ariens Platium SHO 30 surges under snow load

I own an Ariens Platium SHO 30 (921051) with an AX 414cc Gen 3 engine.
It's a year old. I bought it last February.
It starts ok.
It idles ok.
It runs ok with throttle on high, choke off and augers on, with no snow.
With the throttle on high, as soon as I start snow blowing through snow the engine surges low and high, over and over.
If I put it on 3/4 to 1/2 choke it runs fine with no issues.
Running rich is using way too much gas, not doing the air any good. And I'm not sure if it hurts the engine by running too hot.

Why do I need to run with the choke on but only when running under snow load?
Don't just say bad gas, dirty fuel line, etc.
I want to know why bad gas, dirty fuel line, etc. makes it need to run on choke but only under snow load.
Why does more gas fix it, even if it's bad gas or a dirty fuel line or something else? Isn't this just pushing more of the dirty gas into the engine?
It may have run like this when I got it brand new. I bought it from an Ariens dealer.

It sounds like it is running lean. Often, this is because carbs are set up to run lean to pollute less and make the EPA happy. You can try cleaning the carb - possibly some passages are dirty, or you can put a little bit larger jet in it to force more fuel into the engine. Read about re-jetting that people with newer Hondas are doing.

Did you buy it a year ago and let sit with gas in it for a year and then start it up?

I'm not a mechanic but some of the guys have recommended the following for your symptoms in the past.

Siphon the old gas out using a turkey baster, refill with fresh gas with a double shot of Seafoam gas treatment mixed in. Let it run a few times, maybe a few 15-20 minute runs it might clean the carb out enough so that it runs well again.

Henceforth try to get non ethanol gas and always use a gas treatment like Seafoam.

Sounds like the early stages of a gummed up carburetor.

I usually run a full bottle ( 8 oz. or so ) of carb/injector cleaner in the gas once a season and particularly after summer layup to keep the carburetor clean.

When you have the choke closed it cuts the air flow down some to make up for a lack of gas ie to lean. The air fuel ratio is bad for some reason most the time from a jet in the carb getting clogged or junk fuel. The engine needs less fuel with no load so it may run ok till you load it up and the governer starts its thing to keep the speed up but the issue of bad ratio causes the surg. Bad fuel does not burn as well it cant ignite as easy so there has to be less air in the cylinder.

Running rich (with the choke) is safe. That actually runs at a cooler temperature than running too lean (not enough fuel).

If the high-throttle jet is restricted, it might get the proper fuel mix at lower speeds. But as the throttle opens due to a load, and the carb begins using the high-throttle jet, it might not get enough fuel.

The problem may not be with the fuel itself, exactly. As in, draining it and filling with fresh gas may not change the situation. The problem may be that the old gas degraded, slightly clogging the tiny holes in the carburetor jets. This restricts them, reducing the amount of fuel provided by the carb, for a given volume of air. Making your mixture too lean, not enough fuel for the volume of air.

I have the same 414cc gen 3 engine and it runs perfectly, so your problem is not the setup of main jet and emulsion tube.

If the main jet is partially blocked then you will get your symptoms (like my neighbour with a smaller version LCT and poor performance from the start). Also ethanol in the gas will suffer from water absorption and be difficult to burn and in my experience fuel stabiliser does not fix that over time (season to season). Running your machine with the choke on may result in fuel washing the oil from the cylinder walls and over time diluting the oil.

Since your machine is just a year old then your dealer should fix it without charge unless you failed to dump last year's gas and use fresh gas for this year.

Great advise, I do this procedure and it always takes care of above problem.

You have some good advice here. I agree with everyone.

Completely drain the gas from the tank and carb, shake tilt, to get every drop out. Then refill with fresh gas, add Stabil and a strong dose of a fuel cleaner to it, Seafoam is good, Berryman's also.

If you have a low and a high speed adjustment, use it, if not, get an adjustable kit or get larger jets or drill your jets out the next size larger, or maybe the same size just to be on the careful side in case the key has some residue.
