Ariens 10000 Series - Lovejoy coupler "clunks" on auger engagement

I recently repowered my 32" 10000 series Ariens snowblower with a 10HP Tecumseh.

One thing I noticed is that when I engage the auger, it makes a loud "clunk" sound when the lovejoy coupler engages with the auger.
It looks like the belt is still spinning a bit despite moving the tensioner out, so it seems like there is always some level of light spinning when the coupler engages - making the loud sound.

The old engine on the snowblower never worked right so I can't say I know what it is supposed to sound like from before. What I'm wondering is if this clunk is normal and expected - if not, how have others fixed it?
