issue with my Ariens friction disc system?

Hello,

I've pulled my Ariens 926DLE out of storage to do maintenance and paint up some rusty spots. After changing the oil, I fired it up and drove it down the driveway (just put new poly skid shoes and a scraper bar on, adjusted for 1/8" gap under the scraper blade). with the bucket lifted up in the air, it powers it's self down the driveway smoothly. When I set the bucket down and engage the drive, it powers down the driveway ok, but it seems to shimmy or stutter(motion) slightly while moving forward, the engine is running smoothly, no issues there. it still feels like it's going the same speed as when I have the bucket lifted, just stuttering some. Is this a sign my friction disc is starting to go? is cable adjustment enough or should I just replace the disc? It's still the original disc, it's the original drive belt as well ( I bought it new in 2004).

Thanks!

Hello neighbor to the north of me,

I would change both the drive belt and the friction disc with your snow mule being 14 years old as V belts deteriorate with age and use and the same rules can be applied to the friction discs.

Be sure to purchase a Kevlar replacement V belt in the same size as they are much more shock resistant.

Thanks guys. I've got a new drive belt hanging on the wall in the garage, just haven't installed it since I didn't have issues previously, had it just in case. I'll order the drive disc and put both new belt and disc on, neither should hurt, that's for sure. I'll have to look into the water drain plate too, I've not encountered drive issues before, but it looks like cheap insurance.

i would eyeball both components first before replacing and inspect the whole drive system to maybe see any other problem.

if there is a way to lift the machine and do it so you can see it in operation , that would be helpful.

Wouldn’t be bad insurance to look into but it’s the 926LE that has the issues with the water and the two belts, This one is the DLE, Different machine all together

Sno-Tek Modded, 15"X-Track tires (Now has same X-Track tires but 13"x4" for better fit), 254cc engine LED light and hand warmers.
Snapper 6/22 sold but not forgotten. Was my first.
Ariens ST1027LE workhorse and going strong.
New 2017 Ariens Deluxe completely rebuilt after losing a fight with a forklift.

Just an update. I opened up the transmission. The friction disk was warn a bit, but what was causing the shimmying was there was a 1" crack in the rubber on the friction disk, I'm thinking when the bucket was up in the air, there wasn't enough drag to cause the disk to slip or notice the crack, but once the bucket was on the ground, there was enough drag to notice the slight slipping when the crack in the disk would roll over the friction plate. I replaced the friction disk, all operates as expected again.

Thanks everyone!
