06 Ariens 724, what auger gearbox lube is OK?

I have a "new" '06 Ariens ST724E (932046) w/ OHV 7hp Tecumseh, OH195SA .
I know nothing about servicing snowblowers so please go easy, I just want to not
harm the equipment. I assume the little auger gearbox needs fresh gear lube, Is it
really necessary to buy the stuff with Ariens Name on the label or is there an acceptable
equivalent, & GL spec? as usual there is too much random internet information out there
and certainly I'll get straight answers here.........

Thanks in advance for all input. I just want to get it right............

Use the Ariens L3 lube, its a synthetic product. And it can even be used in older machines that used L2, without any issues. That way you know it wont hurt the bronze parts in the case.

OVERPOWERED is usually Adequate

Can you mix the two, or is it better to drain the L2 and replace it with L3?

The back of the Ariens L3 bottle says it can be used in L2 gearboxes. Since L1 and L2 have been superceded by L3 and L3 is specified for all cast iron and aluminum gearboxes it appears safe to add L3 to a L2 gearbox already containing L2 oil. However your L2 oil will be quite dirty after 11 years so if you can drain the old oil and replace with the new L3 oil that would be the better way to go.

The L3 is very thin oil and leaked from the impeller seal after 2 years. All the seals were replaced under warranty and they lasted for another 2 years before the impeller seal leaked again. I replaced the impeller seal this spring. I made up a tool to set the oil level to factory spec so I know that the level is correct (checked after dealer repair). Not everyone is having this problem so perhaps it is due to my heavy use.
