HNSK100 Crank Shaft End Play

Hi all I have a Tecumseh HMSK100 engine, which actually ray good. I took the back cover apart to change the crankshaft & PTO oil seals. What I'm seeing is there is a good amount of play when I pull it in and out, we are taking at least 1/8 of an inch so .125, maybe even a little more. On this engine, I guess it is what it is?? And just run it till in fails???

I have not taken the front and flywheel off, since why waste my time, as I don't think there is any bearing there. Seems these engines are just a steel crankshaft that runs on the aluminum housing and when it wears there is no going back or any repair.

I'm I correct in this?

you are correct about no bearings, but the seals do still dry out over time and elak, as to end play it is set by the gasket thickness just as of you were shimming it

Hi 33, Yeah I get the seals that's not big deal short money, easy fix.

I'm not following your comment on the gasket thickness. The end play I'm talking about is pulling the shaft in an out, not side to side. Without taking the front apart, what I believe is the steel crankshaft has no bearing on the part that goes into the housing it simply goes into the housing aluminum, and if I take he fly wheel off I would bet there is no bearing on that side, just a seal, no bearing.

@Gtrian, I think what he means is that the space between the two bearings (where the endplay occurs) is determined in part by the thickness of the rear cover gasket, and also by the wear on the inner face of the crank bearing. In other words, a thicker gasket would cause more endplay. If it got excessive I imagine you could get a thin stainless washer that fit over the crank and use it as a shim to take up some of the endplay; just lap it down for the correct amount of endplay. There is a repair manual from Tecumseh that has all these specs but I don't have the link ATM.

I have a slight leak on the OH195SA on my ST724, probably just the front crank seal dried out, as it's a 2007. I have the seal and gasket kit, just waiting for spring to work on it.

I have no idea where I would even get shims. They don't exist from what I can tell

general endplay of the crank going by my shop manual is .005 to.027 thousands for the hsk motors

end play is set by using thinner or multiple gaskets
