brake linnings

My Ariens 924040 has a brake lining that needs to be replaced. The old lining was riveted onto a curved shoe ( 2 rivets) Brakes works with belt on the large impeller pulley. The new replacements are flat and quite stiff, My question is can I just bend as is or do I need to heat them with a hot air gun etc. to fit onto the curved shoe ? If I bend to much I'm sure they would break.
