JD 726 Impeller shaft pulls in and out of the gear box

Hi, trying to limp my 726 though the rest of the season. The impeller shaft slides in and out of the gear box to the point where the impeller is hitting the housing. There is a cap on the front of the gear box where you can get at the end of the impeller shaft and bushing. Is there something I can easily replace under this cap so the impeller shaft does not slid in and out so far? Maybe throw a washer in there for now? I am planning a rebuild this summer. Thanks in advance.

Looking at the diagram in the service manual, there is a bushing that looks accessible from the cap on the gear box. Is the bushing what keeps the shaft from moving toward the rear of the machine? I plan to pull that cap off and disassemble things a bit tonight.

Curious if you got anywhere on this problem? I am fighting what is probably the opposite, can't figure out how to separate the impeller shaft and the gearbox. Would like to know if you have any advice or can describe what you found with yours.
