Tecumseh Starter

I checked a snowking starter for a friend and he says it just spins. I thought the bendix was dirty, stuck. But NO the starter spins BACKWARDS the bendix if set out draws back in. If someone reversed the 2 power wires to the brush plate would that do it??. I compared it to a starter I was servicing on my blower and yes it spins opposite.

Yes, reversing leads on a DC motor will reverse the direction of rotation.

If AC, then no . . .

Might even be as simple as the battery being hooked up backwards . . . (if it has one).

As tadawson stated, reversing the power input leads on an AC motor will not change it's direction.

But, if the starter motor is series-wound (the field windings and the rotor windings are connected in series) then I believe that internally swapping the field or rotor lead connections (only one, not both) will cause the motor to run in the opposite direction. So, gregg, I think you are correct that reversing the 2 power wires to the brush plate would cause the motor to reverse direction. I have opened several of these types of starter motors for repair but I have not inspected the wiring arrangement to determine if they are in fact series-wound, but I think they probably are.

5hp Tecumseh starters work differently than 6hp and up. 5hp the bendix moves towards the starter motor, 6 and up it moves away from it.
