Forum Newbie Toro engine swap opinions

I purchased a few Toro single stage units with blown engines. The one I am building for myself is a 621E with hardly any scratches on the scraper and hole in the block. The factory motor is the loncin 168. I found a LCT 208 snowforce that someone planned to put on a go cart and realized that setting up the throttle to work would be too much 'work' so it is on craigslist for 80.00. IF it will mount up to the 621 and I can make the exhaust and everything functional without much altering of the factory setup I thought I would keep it since parts are available for the motor. This years replacement for the 621 is identical but has a bigger motor [email protected] and called the 721.

The identical factory motor long block but bare is 160 and motor with exhaust and tank flywheel and starter is 225 approximately plus shipping for either. I have other options for the LCT if it doesn't work out on my blower.

So far I have 80 invested in the 621E and it looks like it just came out of the box.

let us know how the motor swap goes, I haven't had the pleasure of a toro single stage four stroke yet

Well other than some 5/16 fine thread bolts the transplant engine is ready. The choke function will be the biggest issue without cutting a second hole in the top of the cover. I am already going to have to cut one for the dipstick tube. The factory toro muffler bolts right on but I am going to have to rebuild the support bracket on the muffler to fit the new engine. According to prices.

I considered swapping the carb from the old engine to the new but going from 167cc to 208 in my mind would cause lean issues but then again it would be pulling more air through also. I think my best bet is make the choke function and leave the engine unaltered. If I can do a quality job on the hole for the choke the knob will hide the hole and a choke function sticker would make it look factory.

This motor does not have electric start but the flywheel has the gear and if I sell the factory toro starter and carb along with other parts and buy the starter on ebay I will still be into the whole thing for 160.00 plus time total on a unit that would be 600.00 plus tax new.

I have a 418r and a 418er but I think I am going to just factory motor those two and sell them on craigslist. Pics to come

if you use the smaller carb it would not pull in more air and you would loose hp simply because the motor couldn't pull enough air in in the first place though it might have a higher speed going through the carb. think of tit as a 5/8 water hose compaired to a 3/4 water hose

It is completed but I still need to decide how to finish the choke control so it is controllable outside of the housing. The only 'real' modifications to make the 208cc motor work is building a support bracket for the factory toro muffler and cutting a hole in the top cover for the dipstick. The choke control needs to be reconfigured so a person doesn't have to reach up under the back housing to use it. Minor wiring to have an accessible on off switch. It is relatively plug and play. I never heard the original motor run but have heard complaints about them being prone to over active governor surging. This 208cc motor really runs smooth and quiet by itself.

The 721E has a comparable engine to mine now and is around 600-625 around here and mine is ready for snow at 160.00! I recently sold a rebuilt 3/20es craftsman that had 70 invested and sold for 150.00 so I got a huge upgrade for 10 bucks extra.

I purchased a factory motor for one of the 418ZR units that had electric start which basically upgraded it to a ZE off ebay new for 140.00 shipped and 25.00 worth of chute parts and after it was said and done had 215.00 total cash invested and of course my brother wanted it so I sold it for 220.00.

I contacted the guy I purchased the motor from and he had another whole unit he bought new that home depot clearanced out rather than send it north and bought the motor and chute parts that I needed off of it for 200 shipped with electric start which would have been 300.00+ online and made it not worthwhile to build. After it is said and done I will have 240.00 in this one total and have it spoken for at 325.00.


This has not been a bad endeavor. I haven't made out like a bandit but here is how I have done.


sold an old craftsman 3/20es I repaired for 150 for 80 profit

Bought a 620E blown engine 80.00. for personal use
Found a new replacement engine for 80.00

Bought 2 418zr units blown engines other parts missing 80.00

rebuilt one for my brother 5.00 profit
building one now @profit 80.00

Sold a few parts off the blown motors 35.00

Total cost in my same as new 621e - free with $40.00 (profit)

I have a few other engine parts to sell also so might make another 25-30.00.

So I started with an old craftsman 2 cycle that I had to repair a cracked auger housing and replace the scraper and paddles and used for a season and made profit and upgraded to a 2014 Toro 621E that didn't even have a scuff on the auger and a couple light scratches on the scraper bar with some cash in my pocket.
