How to remove the carb 1970 Ariens 22999

Been fiddling around for almost a week and have done all I could, in my opinion, from laying on the cold ground. I have decided to remove the carb but am unable to due to the Fort Knox Ariens carb cover. Can anyone tell me after I remove the screws, how am I supposed to take this cover off?? Or do I have to take off the handles, etc just to get at the carb??

The chute handle has to be removed first. The two sheet metal screws by the throttle cable and the two screws under the primer knob also have to come out. Pull the cover away and up from the engine to remove the cover.

Thank you Grunt, AGAIN!!!

Took the carb off and holey smokes was it dirty under there. Sprayed carb cleaner allover that I used up a can.


Now I'm in deep doo-doo. My fingers don't function as they should sometimes and I dropped a nut into the hole where the gas line comes out. What do I have to do to get it out of there, since it fell to the bottom?? Please don't tell me I have to open up the engine.......

Would a telescoping magnet get in there to pick up the nut? You should be able to buy one at any auto parts stores or harbor freight. I know this has helped me out from time to time when I drop things working on equipment and/or cars. Best of luck.

If you mean the nut fell into the recoil shroud area, it is pretty simple to reach. You will have to remove two or three bolts on the top of the shroud and one on each side near the bottom to slide the shroud off. You could try the magnet as Jeff R suggested, but if your luck is the same as mine, the nut is probably stuck to the flywheel magnet and will require the shroud removal anyway. Don't give up, we are all counting on you.

Spraying the outside of the carb is good, but the dirt making it not start or run poorly is on the inside and HAS to be cleaned thoroughly.
