Partial carb kit for MTD 22" dual-stage

HI, I'm a relative novice mechanic. Haven't done any rebuilds since I was a kid. I have an MTD 31A-32AD762 (s/n 1G218B40340) and I believe it needs at least a partial carb rebuild. There is 165-S stamped on the body of the carb. How can I find the necessary parts to do a partial rebuild?

The carb actually looks very simple. I cleaned out the bowl (it wasn't all that dirty) and the float and pin also look just fine.

Perhaps it's possible it just needs to be entirely replaced? If so, do you have a part number I can use?

The problem with the snowblower is that it starts, then immediately stops, leading me to believe it's not receiving enough fuel. The fuel filter looks to be in good shape, and there wasn't any junk on the bottom of the gas tank.

Any ideas how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi gossamer
Your carb probably needs a complete cleaning. The fact that it starts and then shuts right off is most likely a fuel supply issue. It is probably occurring INside the carb. There is the bowl nut, which has very small holes that need to be free. Also the needles need to be inspected, and there chamber clean as a whistle. One little piece of rubber from a fuel line that is deteriorating is enough to wreak havoc. Check out the videos on youtube that Donyboy73 has on carb cleaning. They will help. MH

after 5 attempts i still couldnt get the carb clean on the same machine. i just ordered an aftermarket carb for 15.25. works well and cant complain for the price, cheaper then a rebuild kit.

Just bought a new carb, although it was more than $15.25, lol. Let's see how it goes.

You said you had the same model? I followed the amazon link, and it doesn't list the 951-10974A carb as compatible with the models covered by that carb.

I paid like $29, so it would be great to return it and get the $15 one instead....
