1968 Ariens 10md6, Tec H60 starts, won't run

Hello - hoping for some good advice.
I'm trying to fix a 1968 Ariens 10md6 54437, w/ Tec H60 75003G, 1302 3M SER 9010R engine. It starts but won't run
The throttle/carb/governor linkage is McGyvered from the guy before me and it doesn't work. It starts, runs for 2-4 seconds at very high revs, and dies. It's pretty close to correct, but not close enough. The throttle cable is hooked directly to the arm on the control assembly that also conects to the governor arm and butterfly, which seems to me to eliminate the spring that might help the governor do its job.
My fix would be replacing the control assembly and carb, but I won't if there is a bigger problem with governor or whatever.
Any thoughts?

OmegaTim,

There is a good video on YouTube by donyboy73 that shows how to adjust the governor linkage. He has a number of excellent instructional videos on Tec engines.

Hope this helps.

Jackmels, I don't know what PM means, but I am having second thoughts about putting any money into this 47 yr old engine. A brand new Predator is around $100. I'm just north of Worcester. How much for the throttle assembly?

Predator would be a nice upgrade and you can always list the Tec on Craigslist to get some $$ out of it. Not sure if you have an electric start but the 212cc Predator doesn't have an option to add electric start or a charging circuit for headlight or hand warmers.

Rob711 made me chuckle aloud.
Does the Predator need any mods to help it run well in sub-freezing temps?
What about the bolt on, will I need to extend the mounting bolts or anything?

Kiss4aFrog - No electric start on the tec, and the recoil that's on there now is not the right one - and it is finicky. Like, right now I have to pull it off and do something to the dog ears and hope it works for 20 pulls before I have to pull it off again. PIA when trying to get it running/adjusted and not good in the middle of a storm. The engine is all bonus, though. I paid $40 for it, the Ariens 10MD6 it's on, and a 10M5 that has no engine. All I needed out of the lot was an auger system for my sweet '73 10995 model.
Do you know if a Tecumseh 5.5 hp engine ohv Enduro would fit either the MD6 or MD5? I found one locally for $75 in good running condition.
