Gas tank Repair

I am restoring an older briggs engine with a steel tank with rust in it.

I know there are a number of products out there that you can use on the inside of a rusty tank... it is some kind of polymere that seals small leaks in the tank, encapsulates the rust and prevents additional rusting. They all vary somewhat.

Can anyone recommend a specific brand that they have used and liked?

Thanks.

They tend to be pricey, can you get a replacement tank instead...???
That's what I would do.

Yes .......$70 plus shipping. What I have been looking at is around $30 and I will only use half of it. I can use the other half at a future time assuming it has some shelf life.

If I could get it for under $40 i would buy new. I found a few used on ebay but they may not be much better than what I have now.

If you're cheap like me you go to Home Depot and buy a gallon of Muriatic Acid for pools. It's really hydrochloric acid! Be carefully! Fill the tank half up, slosh it around to get in all the nooks and crannies, it will foam like crazy and eat away the rust. It would eventually consume the metal tank too! So don't leave it in too long! Don't do it inside as it may foam up over the tank. It will eat away the paint too. Flush it out good with water. When you remount the tank install a small fuel filter and you're good to go.
This is an extreme solution and will eat your clothes and your skin too! Be careful! You can dilute it some and still get it to work. Always add acid to water! NOT water to acid!

Thanks storm! I remember that from my Chemistry labs many years ago. I am using 5% acid vinegar and changing it out every day. The acetic acid eats the rust and the metal. It does foam but not excessively. I think this is doing the same thing but not as aggressive as the muriatic acid. I was told you can get vinegar that is 10% acetic acid. I have not seen it. I did see some 6% at wal-mart and I did pick that up for my inventory of cleaners.

I would like to coat this tank just for longevites sake but it may not be worth it. So I may not do it. either way, I am very curious as to what people's experience may be with these products. I am sure at some point this will come up for me again, weather it is a car or some other implement, i just don't know.

Shops that specialize in radiators and gas tanks will do it for you, I am told. None close to where I live, and I am sure they would charge more than the cost of the new tank.

I will get a new fine wire screen filter for it. very good advice.
