What model tiller is this?

The only troy bilts I have ever seen have the engine out front like this...

But this one on CL appears to be a troy as well (based on the wheels, at least) but it has the engine on top...

Can anyone lend some insight as to what make/model this is?

It's a very early Troy Built. I forget the actual model but for some reason model 2 comes to mind. It has what are called pick tines on it instead of bolo tines go over My tractor forum which is our parent forum and scroll way down to the bottom and open Tiller Talk. You will find your answer there. Forum member chzuck (I think that's now he spells it) has his own page/blog and you definitely will find it there. That tiller is missing the belt cover.
Hope this helps.

I have one like that in my barn, that I no longer use. It looks to be one of the Rotoette models. Same man that designed the Troy Built, first built the Rotoettes. He copied many of the design features into his later Troy Built machines. The one pictured, is cobbed up a bit. Wrong engine, added tank on the handles, Multi pulley on the engine and all the front shrouding is missing, as well as the original wood hand grips. The one I have, was made in 1954. ----- John

My father owned a tiller similar to this, and it was pre Troy Built, The company was 'Rototiller' I used it for 50 years, put 2 motors on it, and finally took it to the dump, should have scrapped it.
